Operas are tedious I agree, but the operas of "Wagner"? The Bard of Bacchus? No. Wagner was a philosopher first before a musician, he grasped the concept of "will" passed down to him by the great Schopenhauer. Opera is the most limited, impotent genre of music. It needs props, literal and figurative, to achieve anything at all. What better and greater forms of musical expression achieve with pure music, opera fails to attain with the help of mediocre literature, embarrassing disguises, haphazard movement on a stage, and not even the pure, truly human movement of dance.
Much like greek tragedy and even the theatre at large there is no place nor need for opera anymore, and arguably there hasn't for more than half a century. Unlike pure, abstract music (newtonian), or even non-narrative, picturesque programme music, works made to carry a text-based narrative (wagnerian) have proven to be a transient, contingent product of a cultural adolescence that we are now finally growing out of.
Bach didn't write any operas. Beethoven wrote one before realising it was a waste of time and effort. Brahms, their inheritor, knew better and didn't bother. The greatest operas of all time have been written within the last century and a half, and are great works despite being operas, not because of it.

Brahms is an entirely uninspired composer who only wrote music that was already familiar to himself, never once did he listen with an unbiased ear to the ground breaking work of his contemporaries. Marcel Duchamp said art stopped being art after a number of years because the cultural context it was created in is lost, and it loses the violent response truly great works of art elicit, if he was right then what Brahms wrote wasn't even art at the exact moment of creation; there's nothing interesting in writing stale music that sounds like it was written a century earlier.
