When did the point of divergence happen between western mechs and eastern mechas? Who started the box with legs trend and how did western mechs look before that?

Western mechs were always all over the place, between more fanciful stuff like War of the World tripods or Forbidden Planet Robbies to more "realistic" affairs like the AT-ATs in ESB or BSG's Cylons. The chickenwalker has its routes in the AT-ST, but the definite patient zero for modern "Western mecha" design is Battletech/Mechwarrior, which in turn just lifted Japanese mechs like the Glaug from Macross and gave them a fresh coat of paint.tl;dr, anyone who gives a fuck about whether a mecha comes from the east or west because they both have a wide range of concepts and can't just be boiled down to two general ideas.

You can kind of just keep reducing it. A lot of the stereotype comes very specifically from the older mechwarrior games that were clan-focused. Clans more often use mechs with less humanoid shapes, and so a bunch of people whose only interaction with mecha and even with battletech's universe comes from that. This leads to "western mecha don't have heads or hands, they're like tanks on legs!", which isn't even accurate for the thing they're talking about, they just aren't very familiar with the setting.

The earliest mecha was Talos from Greek Myth, basically just a big man made of bronze. The legitimate first scifi mech was Tripod from War of the World.

It is funny how a large chunk of Western mechs were just aping Maschinen Krieger. AT ST might have been the god father of chicken mecha but it was clean as fuck and coated in white primer. Ma.K actually introduced the weighty and old rusty aesthetic to western mecha.

Non-Japanese giant robot fiction basically isn't a thing, so the question really is moot.

Mechs were created in west. "Wheel tank" created in ru empire was a bit similar to mech.

What caused the greebilification of eastern mechas?

I imagine the boxy nature of the AT-ST and AT-AT in Star Wars had a large influence on western designs for Sci-Fi.

Should it even be called western vs eastern anymore? Armored core has both in it. Gundam has the tieren. Most of the mechs in EDF are walking tanks. Japan doesn't do just humanoid stuff anymore.

You need more than a western/eastern distinction.
You need to take into account the intent of the authors,An author who never cared for realism will go for artistic design common in his country.
Authors caring about realism may see their designs converge simply because form follow function.

Im not exactly sure when it started but it's very funny to me that you have a bunch of retards in the west who HATE eastern mecha for being to "anime" and unrealistic. For example I met a guy who would play mechwarrior(another instigator for creating guys with bizarre mecha takes) and refused to use mechs that looked to much like "megazords" because he thought they were unrealistic. There is this type of western mecha chud who autistically wants all mechs to be slow chicken walkers that are clunky like a tank on legs. That's fine in a vacuum of a setting bereft of logic, but it's not actually realistic at all. I mean this with no hint of irony, if mechs are to be viable IRL at all, they'd have to move like an anime mech with a very organic range of movement like a Gundam.I think another western mechatard thing that annoys me is the insistence on comparing them to tanks. Mechs do not make sense in competition against tanks. Mechs only make sense as the logical expansion of the idea of power armor taken to the Nth degree to increase their performance. A tank is a crew served vehicle, a mech is ideally maximizing the performance of a single man as much as possible. Mecha as a genre is big enough to contain both these competing ideas but it's funny the guys that want to be the most die hard realismfags are simultaneously the least realistic

Miyatake and Kawamori's story about trying to sell sponsors on their chicken walkers is funny when in a few months ESB came out and everyone was shoving their own imitations out the door after having said no to the Studio Nue kids every time.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNyElhfY_7Y
