Let's say I'm a bad motherfucker with infinite resources and I want a weapon of mass destruction that can fuck over Earth or other planets. What are the best options?
I don't have a clear goal yet so it'd be good to work out what sort of massive weapon would be the best option for what goal.
Like, say, if I just want to destroy a planet or two without negotiations. Is a Death Star style weapon better than a colony drop?

If you're going around committing galactic omnicide than yeah a Death Star would be your best bet, or if you have somewhere safe to hid it a Galaxy Gun that slings FTL bombs to nuke planets would be even better because you can snipe planets with impunity

Go for a Colony Laser, or maybe an array of them. That way you can use it multiple times. Colony drops are single use after all.

Well that is quite liberating indeed
Angel Halo from Victory Gundam can quite literally wipe out all humans on the whole planet within a few days tops, all you need to do is build a good enough screening force to keep it safe for long enough.
A Death Star is undeniably faster, but then the planet is gone. You can't do anything with it besides some salvage.

Whole planet melting requires projectile/planet mass ratios of <0.4 for a 15 km s-1 impact. You don't really need the whole planet to melt. Creation of a magma ocean would be more than enough to destroy all life. The earth would just be hanging out until the Sun supernovas.
