It's a spoof on the whole genre. You watch it for that reason. If you've watched a lot of mecha shows you would enjoy it. Honestly it's kind of not fantastic on its own.

My public library had the entire series on dvd and I loved it as a kid. Man my library had this, Robotech, Gundam Wing, and Last Exile. It had other things but this is all the mech/plane stuff I remember

To be fair you have to have an extremely high IQ to understand Nadesico. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of mecha anime most of the references will fly over the typical viewer's head.
