I like the basic idea. Being a mecha pilot because you're so misaligned from everything and everyone else to begin with or become like that because you pilot and, one way or another, that's the end result. Home being where you can shut yourself inside the cockpit, all right with the world.

I had an idea for a setting where the pilots have to be limbless (for size or control purposes), and for a mech pilot who got so hard into it that, rather than getting prosthetics for out of mech stuff like everyone else, got a human-sized robot that she pilots remotely to care for herself. She feels comfortable controlling a machine at all times so she identifies with them, and sees her real body as something more akin to a flight computer with supporting equipment that needs regular maintenance.
