The problem was pretty well apparent while the show was airing. An alternate history what-if would have been good. A big tournament arc type batlle anime would have been good. Some big Eva style mutliverse thing that was about all these emotions would have been good. The problem is that those are 3 separate, distinct anime. If they had literally any chance of covering all 3 in one series it needed to be a full 50 episode run like many other entries in the franchise already are. Cramming all of that into 12 episodes was so actually retarded that everyone involved in that decision should be an instant red flag on all future projects.

It's kind of a shame how they completely abandoned the iconic designs and art style of the original, completely basterdized the fictional science of the original to absurdity, simultaneously managed to underdevelope the new cast while making them feel out workplace in the grander narrative of the world, added in elements and references from vaguely related anime for no real reason and decided to make the ending a completely unnecessary good ending for characters that already got a good enough conclusion year prior. Even the action scenes were a downgrade to the original anime It's milking nostalgia from. I expected better from Tsurumaki, but at least the girls were cute

Should have stayed on Side 6, at least for longer. Should have stayed focused on the new characters and Chalia. It's fine for the OG cast to be involved, but they shouldn't be the focus. Needed either more length or more focus. Tried to do too much with too little, and that's coming from someone who liked the breakneck pacing. Still a pretty good show, though. Was fun, looked and sounded great, felt good to watch.

It was actually pretty good. Its main problem though was the same that plagues a lot of shows these days, it was just too short for all the ideas they put in it. It needed a full 26 episode season to do that. As it is, it was paced way too fast and didn't have enough time to breath or explore most of its concepts.

The whole story just being the result of Shuji simulating the murder of his unrequited love over and over again didn't sit well with me. I mean I guess it's believable as an act of passion from a newtype who's far enough gone, but it just doesn't feel connected with the show's premise. Didn't help that despite being such an inciting event, we don't even know how Shuji knows Lalah, and shortly after we are explained how madly in love he is with Lalah, we are supposed to accept him and Machu as being a thing.

A lot of cool ideas that just didn't feel connected. Like I enjoyed Challia Bull's depiction for most the show. And it kind of feels like his big scene that culminates between him and Machu is him telling his story of nearly committing suicide, and giving his gun to Machu as a sentimental symbol to keep going but... Machu is never really depicted as encountering that kind of challenge at all or having to climb up from that kind of low and it's literally just a gun to her. Great set up. Meh payoff. A lot of the show was like this.

I thought it was decent till the very end, but essentially saying we never really knew Shuji (how much of his characterization was an act?), and then saying whole setting revolves around him choosing to reset the universe over and over, was a real one-two punch of disappointment. I liked it more when I interpreted the info dump in episode 9 as Lalah herself subconsciously resetting the universe after a certain point of not being satisfied with the outcomes it brought. Because at least Lalah is already part of UC as we know it. Having Shuji yoink all the agency away from her, without really explaining who he is, or who he is to Lalah, feels like a mistake.

Aside from them just not giving a shit about the ending at all lmao, the problem with it is that it never truly committed to either concept about alternate realities and the girl drama over the two main girls fighting over an autistic boy and also the fighting competition thing. To many concepts crammed into one and not enough time to appreciate them. Also, ultimately, we end up just caring about the Alt-UC characters more than the new characters. We probably shoulda just ended up with just Machu being the only new character and the rest are known characters.In the end I think what is most damning is that for a theoretical S2, I want to know what's going on with Char and I want Amuro to show up. I want to see the earth go full Titans mode. I don't really care what's going on with Machu and the other girl and their Gundams. I also think a lot of people generally agree with me
