Franchises need to appeal to female audiences now because they are a larger market. Hence why we are getting female protagonists in every sci-fi series now (Gundam, Star Trek, Doctor Who etc)

Because women spend 3-5 times more on stupid crap than men do and are also more likely to post about it on social media and basically give it free advertising. Thats why the past decade you've seen so many companies try to revive themselves by shifting away from the shrinking child/young adult market and catering more and more to women. Gundam has always had a solid female fanbase but even they have been pushing to expand it because otherwise they will stagnate and go into a slump.
