Why couldn't Hegel have written a little more straightforwardly? Sentences like:

I’ve never read him because I find his prose so viscerally repulsive but I suspect he had a very dim conception of what he was trying to say, if in fact he did have something to say

You must know what he means before you read him and then do some loose association of concepts while you read him. Nobody will tell you this outright but every modern Hegelian is actually a Houlgateian. Read secondary literature.

Apparently he wrote it during the Napoleonic wars, which may explain why it never received the polish it could have used. Letters survive in which he writes of his fear that he may never get the chance to finish the Phenomenology as cannons were being fired outside his place.
