For Arthurian legend, am I better off going with the vulgate cycle or Le Mort D'Arthur? I have heard that the vulgate cycle is extremely repetitive, but also the Mallory also cut down the stories TOO much. Thoughts?

In my expert opinion, history is boring and you should read Tennyson's Idylls instead.

how does one even afford the vulgate cycle. it's like a billion dollars
