Any recommendations on an alternative to pic related? I'm 49 pages in and I've already found two substantive errors of fact, plus the writing style is insufferable. He thinks so very highly of himself and his analysis that he doesn't let factual details interrupt him. All I want is a historical survey of the Modernist movement especially in literature and fine art. Contextualized would be best but apparently I will have to settle for whatever.
inb4 "Just google modernism" I did and the reviews I found led me to this sack of crap.
inb4 "Make it New!" that is obviously not enough to analyze the entire disparate movement.

That cover art and the author being both gay and jewish makes me wonder just how comical the memory holing of the chuddier side of modernism is in that book anyway. Yeah, keep looking at Picasso and Woolf, don't look at the bespectacled Irish weirdo, the Cats guy and the man with the villainous looking facial hair.

Art Since 1900, for the art.
But with art, literature, the avant-gardes, there was so much going on you can't really speak of one Modernist movement, especially as it is often reduced down to Anglo "modernist" literature in the narrower sense. And to tie it all together by some general cultural condition of the times, usually just results in some weak philosophizing (same for trying to tie together "postmodernism", in literature, art, architecture, theory).
There's also the idea of distinguishing between avant-gardist and merely modernist movements (eg in Bürger's Theory of the Avant-Garde, but that's no historical survey).

I was reading about him the other day. Even Wikipedia pointed out his major work is bias toward promoting libtardism.
