what does esse even *do* that wasn't already handled by Aristotle?
>essence can be conceived without existence
you can define a unicorn without unicorns existing. thoughts aren't beings.
>form makes a being actually F. esse makes that F actually exist
if F is already an actual F, it already exists. “actual but nonexistent” is gibberish.
>essence receives esse
does the essence exist before it receives existence? if yes, it already exists as something and esse is redundant. if no, there’s literally nothing there to receive shit.
>esse is the act of all acts
more grandiose nonsense. form is the being F, and an actual cause (material, efficient, formal, final) makes a being into F depending on which aspect you're looking at. there's nothing left over in need of explanation.
>God causes being as such
fine, then God causes the whole existing thing and the principles of being. no need for esse.
this is basically closeted Platonism where everything needs to participate in esse for... uhhh... uhhh... because St. Aquinas said so. Ockham should have burned every Dominican monastery to the ground when he had the chance.

Notice that we're 9 replies in, and not a single rebuttal was made. Thomists are in shambles.

Unicorns don't exist NOW (in the material plane). What divine authority do you have to affirm they never existed AND never will? That's why Plato was right.

I feel like this board, and the internet in general, is entering a dark age of debate. Nothing new to uncover, nothing more to revisit. Just people in their own little fiefdoms and cults, enjoying rolling around in the mud, never looking for anything better. Sad to see.

Man I know how depressing it is to be a passionate lumpenintellectual. Everyone around you is white trash, ghetto, druggie, etc, or they are wealthy people with “good” jobs who spend all their free time exercising, counting every gram of fiber they eat, and consuming media. No one reads, it’s bleak, we’re surrounded by talking animals. It’s not a matter of their not being able to have “intellectual” conversations, they’re completely hollowed out in every way. But using social websites like 4chan to find pseudocommunity is like eating lead paint chips. Log off, set a task every day, like 50 pages of Aquinas’ commentary on the Metaphysics, and just read. Fuck this site and the braindead faggots who post here. I’ve been fasting from tech for just a few weeks and read so much more than otherwise. Embrace your isolation and learn cool shit, you have no other option I’m afraid, the dark ages are here.

There's a passage in Scripture thats ays God brings things into existence so I think Thomas is just translating that philosophically. Esse is being in creation I think simply, this is trying to explain how things exist without them being in full communion with God and God controlling if things exist or not.
