The Icelanders all regularly read and enjoyed the family sagas up until WW2.
They still do now but it's not as universal.
If you want a body of literature that represents the historical icelandic spirit, go read the family sagas.

I'm going back to the basics again because I mostly just intuit conjugations and inflections these days which is probably a problem and often caused mistakes
