Horrendous book, the inspiration being the bizarre, barely sublimated, psychosexual pathology of the author. Jared Diamond has a complex, as many Jews do, about White civilisation, and feels a warped kinship with the lowest races on the earth; their very existence and nature being antithetical to White civilisation. Thus he writes his little book, and goes on podcasts talking about how the inhabitants of Papua New Guinea are the most intelligent and capable race on planet earth, and how if Genghis Khan was born even 200 miles away would have been a "nobody". OP you're not missing anything, since It's a shit-tier book that states history is somehow predestined by geography. For example, look at how Chapter 3 start off. According to Jared Diamond, Pizarro and his 168 men was able to win against Atahualpa and his 80,000 army easily thanks to their superior weaponry. He then proceeds to ramble about prehistory about why this is the case. Literally even normies know that disease and civil unrest was why the Spanish won over these indigenous empires, which for whatever reason he kind of denies the significance later on. Also the Spanish horses, guns, and even armour were kind of a burden in the Andean Mountains.

Different Anon, I can't recall 100% what Jared Diamond said in his book, but modern genetic analysis does not vindicate the "Africans didn't domesticate anything" because they actually did, independently, domesticate quite a few things. The northern border of Sub-Saharan Africa (think from Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, all the way to Nigera, "from ear to tusk") is an oddly dense center line of domestication: cattle, donkeys, guinea fowl, and about 35 different plants. Again, my memory is fuzzy, but if I'm correct in my assumption Jared Diamon is probably working under the dated impression that plant & animal domestication was something spectacular that happened only in a few "key points", when in reality it's more accurate to think of it as a "on going and widespread process that was defined by a few popularized break-outs". The example I have in my head of this playing out is the Eastern Agricultural Complex in N. America: 5,000 BC natives initially cultivated half a dozen "poor quality" psuedo-grasses (think buckwheat, barley) around the great lakes area, but by 1800 BC corn had finally made it up there and they universally abandoned the other grasses because they fucking sucked.
