Sure, I'll give you one. Picrel is the best one-volume history on the US Civil War ever written.

You should read '100 Artists' Manifestos: From the Futurists to the Stuckists' edited by Alex Danchev for Penguin books. It's great for understanding artistic movements from the futurists to modern day in the words of the artists themselves. Plus the artist manifesto is a genre unto itself, full of rowsing rhetoric and brash playfulness. One of my favourite excerpts is a subsection titled 'Against Pasta' from The Manifesto of Futurist Cooking (1930), pictured above. The futurists were initially a ragtag posse of Italian left anarchists but they became, for largely aesthetic reasons, proto-fascist theorists and eventually the cultural soul of Mussolini's Italy. They had a profound impact on early 20th century art.
