I mean to be fair, the reason they are doing this is because of a dumb fuck judge who ruled that as long as they destroy the book they train their AI on it isn't copyright infringement. Most of the books they are destroying aren't worth shit anyways, they are buying copies of "Windows 95 for dummies" and other outdated technical manuals and what not. They aren't destroying the last surviving copy of books with historical value. That being said AI is stupid.

Most books are awful trash that will be or deserve to be thrown out and forgotten. You've read the ones that matter already.
People should remember that media at most points in history was meant to be disposable, and that the modern era where literacy is seen as common was in fact an unnatural trend that is dying out.

They would only be scanning one copy of each book, and since the scans are presumably kept this could be seen as an act of preservation.Unless they destroyed the last remaining copy, this is a non-issue.
