>The Lord of the Rings is only 477,000 words long Genuinely, how is that even possible? To cram so much into so little? Each book must be only about 130k words, but they feel so massive. How? HOW?

They are boring and a slog to read through so reading a single page feels like reading 3 or 4 pages

Tolkien despite his reputation was a concise author who knew how to keep the plot moving. He is a big contrast to many modern fantasy authors. I'm currently nearly 1000 pages into The Last King of Osten Ard quadrilogy by Tad Williams, and it feels like the plot has only recently started rolling around.

The stereotype of Tolkien has been that he's over-descriptive, in a way that drags, and I think that's the same explanation for why he's concise. He's not being overly descriptive, he's telling you only what you need to know but there's a lot of it. It drags because it's dense. The plot itself moves.

Tolkien used a technique that most writers aren't aware of. It's called "pacing".

Am I supposed to find this crazy or something? Seems totally normal. People must be used to bloated time wasting stuff these days.

That's basically the same word count as Stephen King's IT. LOTR doesn't even have any child gangbangs.

How can you even say this when modern fantasy books exist whose first book in a series campares to the whole trilogy? For example: A Game of Thrones is ~290k words. Curb your enthusiasm.

LOTR is fantasyslop for people too immature to read the classics.
