I highlighted the more interesting tidbits in my ebooks when I find them but writing in an actual physical book seems cringe as fuck to me.

Completely fine until the second it gets posted. If is is about the thoughts in them that you want to share with other people, write a blogpost or a tweet or an article or a book, or anything else. If its not about the thoughts in them but about showing your note-taking, its by definition performative.

I don't know, I read novels for the experience, so I don't annotate or take notes whatsoever. Lots of people seem to read them because they like analyzing themes or whatever. I guess I can see annotating being useful for that. They approach literature like a project, I approach it more like a steady diet. I don't see how annotating would be useful to me.

It keeps you in a more focused stance to be ready to write to read with a pen and underline/write in the sides/etc. if you are used to it it's pretty effortless i'll not write anything at all for some stuff but for some i'll write a bunch but i always read with a pen so that I could.

i like to underline a passage i feel was well written and when i look up a word, i write the definition in the margins. when i started reading dostoyevsky, i thought it would help to underline every name in a different color so i could keep everyone straight. i didn't though.
