Although no female writer occupies the Central Canon (an extremely rarefied group including Shakespeare, Homer, Dante, etc), I submit there is one female in the rung directly below it, namely George Eliot, as well as two in the rung directly below that, namely Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf. Are there others I'm forgetting? Kindly avoid suggesting good writers in rungs further down, such as Le Guin.

What unites the great writers and poets is their understanding of the human heart, on scales both large and small. By that standard Austen at least should be a canonical writer, she knows the human heart as well as anybody.

I would place both Charlotte and Emily Brontë above Jane Austin and Virginia Woolf (just finished To The Lighthouse – overrated I thought). Middlemarch was OK, but again I prefer the work of the Brontës.

She, and most 19th century novelists tbqh, wrote melodramatic slop. You will find nothing of worth in any of them and at least 90% of them can safely be discarded from the bloated 'western canon'.
