The Anime Encyclopedia is literally just MyAnimeList written before MAL existed, completely outdated and worthless. You won't find much weeb scholarship in English except a few translated books like

helen mccarthy is a legit old school anime person so i would trust the former for old stuff, but not sure how the revisions hold up.

I think early otaku culture isn't really documented accurately. If the author has a western name it's likely incorrect, misinformed, or pozzed.

Read/watch old manga and anime classics. Learn to appreciate the best 60s/70s stuff and you'll have avoided a thousand otaku pitfalls. Then you can add some of those books on top if you feel like it.

Neither of those but I read this several years ago and I can confirm it's nothing special. A lot of Lacanian psychobabble, but it has one or two interesting chapters despite it and some good stuff about magical girl anime if you're into that

On on the left looks like a charmingly out of date book that was written before wikis and tries to maintain relevance, one on the right looks like the sort of thing a teenager might get as a birthday or Christmas present but would never get voluntarily.

Haven't read that one but Galbraith does sometimes put out interesting books. Otaku Spaces and Moe manifesto aren't bad.

I might try this one if I can get the library to buy it for me.
