I think early otaku culture isn't really documented accurately. If the author has a western name it's likely incorrect, misinformed, or pozzed.

Read/watch old manga and anime classics. Learn to appreciate the best 60s/70s stuff and you'll have avoided a thousand otaku pitfalls. Then you can add some of those books on top if you feel like it.
