One anon said this is due to cheap POD not being a real publisher, but it's published by Oxford University Press, you'd think they'd have some quality control. I'm really baffled how this happens, and haven't heard a good answer, was it just laziness or is there a better reason?

Cover for proof. Their edition of the Aeneid has long lines but is perfectly formatted so they almost never run over. The difference is crazy.Oh well, I bought a different edition just because it was too annoying to read.

academic publishers have been cheaping out and using POD for awhile now, it’s a real problem. I bought a few Nietzsche books from Cambridge UP and they came in this terrible paper with a split binding, it’s almost to the point where buying online is impossible when you don’t know if you’re getting an actual book or a piece of shit POD that was assembled in some factory in your area so Bezos can save on shipping. Out of curiosity which alternative edition did you end up buying? Also, did you check a pdf of that edition in particular to see if the formatting was an issue with OUP themselves?

I suppose there is a house style of type size (and page and margin size) that they didn't want to depart from, or make the type *too* small for it to fit. Indenting thus (or hanging right-aligned with an opening bracket, thus "[word") is the norm for a too long line, but I agree they could've tried to fix it somehow, given it's mostly a word too long per line. POD has nothing to do with it, as that would usually print an old pdf scan, possibly resized to fit the page, without changing formatting.
