Is this worth reading as a precursor to Jung?

Haven't read it, but I'm generally of the opinion that it's better to take authors in chronological order of influence. Or if anything, just start with Jung. Secondhand descriptions of the work of authors will pretty much always leave you with some wrong impressions, just like reading Wikipedia.
