Honestly? I don't really read a ton of modern sci-fi writers, but I don't think anyone could truly be an "Asimov of modern times." His ideas and presentation were thoroughly unique. There can't be a new Asimov because the era, stresses, and emotional complications cannot be innovated once they are already established. He was unique because he was essentially the first to establish an extended set of potential ethics around AI.
