Dunno about that but you can get a long way with them.You get BREAD but not WATER.
You get DOOR but not WINDOW.
You get MAN but not WOMAN.
You get GRASS but not FLOWER.You get most of the useful animals (DOG, CAT, PIG, HORSE, SHEEP, COW). You don't get BADGER, BEAVER or LEOPARD, but you can probably manage without them.Wonder if there's a list anywhere of the most basic, indispensible polysyllables? Definitely a few you can’t do without.

In a sense, yes, since English's native morphemes skew monosyllabic. (Which are and aren't a separate "word" is more a fact about the writing system than the language- or rather, if all we had was the spoken language, you couldn't justify from it an infinite number of answers about where the word boundaries are, but you could justify more than one. Preliterate Anglophone children often have a different idea of what one "word" is.)
