What are your rules for skipping books? I'm well over halfway through a book that's fucking garbage. Should I just drop it or bite the bullet and skim through the rest?

For work? Set a daily page quota and grind it out.
Personal? Drop it. Skim if you wanna find a plot detail or ending, but by that point I usually don't care.

I just keep going, more often than not I find at least something that I found interesting that makes me glad I stuck with it.

i read a lot of classic literature from grade 7 to 11 and one of them was Atlas Shrugged which at the age of 14 I lacked the capacity to absorb the story so I got maybe 400 or 500 pages in and was just like wtf have I even read the last 300 pages or so? at that point if I remember I dropped it but that contradicts a vague memory of a climactic moment later in the story i feel I recall

Speedread to a proportion with my contempt for it. Even the worst books I mistakenly fell into, with a couple hundred pages to go, can be hammered through in a couple bad hours.If it‘s bad enough with enough left that I know I can put it down and never return then great but that‘s a high threshold to pass and the backlog gets really muddied if I think I‘m setting it aside to be better inclined at some other time.

It depends. If it's absolute garbage (like an indie-published thing someone recommended me, or a genre that's hit or miss for me), then I'll just skip ahead to random places to see if it gets better and read the final chapter real quick. If I actually want a summary, I'll spend 20 minutes skimming reviews online or something.If it's something that I want to read or get through (like a classic, a self-help book, or something that's required reading) I'll speed read through it and slow down if there's anything that looks interesting.
