I just finished Short Sun (absolutely amazing.) the reveal with the inhumi was wonderful and sad and tragic the whole mating ritual being a dance pretending to be human was wonderful and I am convinced that they are the race which will become the Hierograms in later divine years
Was the severian in Short Sun the same sevarian? Or was that an earlier iteration? Does Severian just write himself up to be a monster out of guilt when he’s in reality just an emotionally scarred boy who loves his dog?

Yeah, I kinda mentioned that in a thread a few months ago (I think). I have to think it is some mix of Severian being submerged in the Thecla & 100 Autarchs personality. The voice we get from Severian feels so different in Short Sun than in BOTNS.Either that, or Severian couldn't control the testosterone after puberty lol.

Short Sun has really grown on me, I'm glad you enjoyed it. That detail about the mating ritual stuck with me as well. The fact that the inhumi pretend to be human even at their most vulnerable, with no humans to perform for, is such a tragic detail.

I'm a little into Long Sun. Not as good as New Sun. The whole seeing advanced science as some magic mystical thing doesn't hit as well in third person omniscient narration as it does from first person perspective.
