I recently purchased the Mossberg 940 SPX as my home defense gun and I can’t figure out what light to choose. Im currently torn between these three from Streamlight:
>TLR-1 HP-X
>TLR-1 HL-X
>TLR-7 HL-X
The 1 HP-X has a very high candela but a lot less flood, the 1 HL-X has a lot more flood but much less candela, and the 7 is somewhere in between but has half the battery life but it’s also much smaller. I know they’re all great options but I can’t fucking decide which one to get

1. High candela lights are the current fad, but are silly for home defense. You need to illuminate a room without blinding yourself, not identify a marmot a 600 yards.
2. Look at

First, those are all pistol lights with no remote switches available, so you probably don't want any of them. There are remote switches available for the old TLR-1 family (no -X, e.g. TLR-1 HL), and the TLR RM series is pretty similar to the TLR-7/-9 series, with a remote switch built-in. (Plus they have the ProTac lights specifically for long guns.)The point is not that the remote switch itself is important; normal flashlights with a tailcap switch are just fine if you mount them where the ergonomics work out.
But the built-in switches on pistol lights are poor to ass on long guns, whereas pistol lights with remote switches are fine.Anyway, assuming you're committed to using a pistol switch on a long gun, though:
Forget the TLR-7, the smaller size does nothing for you.Among the TLR-1 flavors, depends what "home defense" means. If it means strictly indoors, no sight lines over 15 yards, either one is fine -- the extra candela won't make any difference at all.
But if it could mean going outside to confront someone breaking into a shop/barn/etc. 50 yards away, or trying to see past other lighting (vehicle headlights, etc.), may as well go with the HP-X. Probably won't matter, but why not.
And if 100 yards and up is a realistic possibility, then you definitely should go for high-candela, but you also should be using a carbine instead of a shotgun, so I assume this is not the case.
