The bayonet traditionally is ultimately a psychological weapon you use against people who you don't mind keeping alive if they surrender. Its modern iteration is simply a knife on the end of a gun designed for the user to essentially run into the threat, length of the overall gun doesn't matter in this kind of trench warfare inspired melee combat which is usually very quick and very deadly.

according to records of black powder era casualty statistics, bayonet wounds were rare relative to shot and cannon this was not because the bayonet charge wasn't a decisive element of period warfare (it was), but because a charge was unlikely to actually connect with its target: if applied with good judgement and timing, the enemy can be expected to give up their ground without further fighting, especially if already wavering and/or struggling to maintain cohesion in ongoing combat weapons have obviously changed a lot since the 18th century, but basic human psychology has not that being the case, I would argue that it's irrelevant if a rifle's performance in bayonet fighting is suboptimal, especially if improving it would compromise the rifle's performance as a rifle

Brits really love bayonet charges. They did them in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, if you leave British soldiers alone and without the supervision of SNCOs and Officers they will naturally start bayonet charging various nearby positions. This is particularly so in Regiments manned by Northerners.We don't fully understand the phenomenon, it's kinda like how the Wildebeest naturally migrates along the Serengeti.

Same reason we did. More COIN operations meant more SWAT/CQB work and smaller mechanised infantry units.Why bayonettes? It's a FC doctrine, half of it is ensuring civilians don't try fuck with or try to disarm soldiers which in COIN is non trivial. The psychological factors are secondary.
