Hypersonic is a tenuous term. Trying to trace to where it may have been first used with good intent - I think the idea was to distinguish the speed step where metals melt in extended atmospheric flight and plasma becomes the contact mechanism with the atmosphere. Significant step up from supersonic aircraft in difficulty. And specifically for aircraft so not bullets, not re-entry vehicles it was 1960s-1980s Cold War aerospace terminology. But then got spread around ineptly.
