He accidentally kicked a hornets nest and fought his way to the bitter end.He encountered something unexpected and misjudged the situation because his intel and eyes told them there were fewer warriors than there actually were (government Intel suggested about 800, as opposed to 1100-2500, and the 7th Cavalry came upon the encampment in the morning when most warriors were sleeping).He divided his troops exactly as he should have for the battle he intended to fight, as the natives usually scattered and ran away and he intended to use the women and children as hostages to force the natives to cease their war on the other tribes.
