Tried out bro's duals for the first time this weekend. Damn having depth perception is nice but I run a PVS14 with a bridged thermal and it's so much more useful i just can't see myself switching over.

picked up a iris4 mostly due to 4mr ranch's videos. For a under 800 (if you know where to look) you get an extremely nice VCEL illuminator, nice lasers that do not cause bloom, and an extremely usable white light. Not only that but the laser has built in override with a multi-button tape switch. Only thing I wish i could do is get a unity axon with 2x crane switches instead as I like the form factor of that over the switch that comes with the IRIS.

I FINALLY got my Chimeras last week. Nocturn Industries and Custom Night Vision probably has a sign posted that says "do not talk to this guy" after as much as I had been bugging them. #106 of supposedly just 150 in this form for the commercial market.I ordered just the housing. I gutted my current binos for 2 tubes, and added 2 more new ones. All L3 filmless, 2376-2383 fom, 0.3-0.5ebi, no registered spots. 22UA, 20UA, 2x 18UM.I made my own spanners to assemble this thing from some plastic door shims. Came with no manual or instructions. Took me about 1.5 hours to gut my binos and put this together. About another hour to set infinity stops and collimate the unit. Really not at all difficult!

I just got my first night vision optic, an old school an pvs2. It works and it’s cool. It’s one of the Israeli surplus units. One question is the radiation shielded on this or am I nuking my eye ball every time I use it?

I've never messed around with nvgs, mostly because of the price and I don't know if I'll end up having fun with it. But I found some old polish nightvision binoculars which, as far as I can tell, are related closest to '50s tanker helmet mounted gen 0 binoculars.
I don't really know anything about nvg stuff and I mostly want something I can walk around in the woods with and see if I can look at some critters.
Is spending a $100 bucks on old binoculars, buying an IR illuminator and messing around with powering it off of a modern battery a good entry point to nvg related stuff?
The thing has a NW-71 designation which seems to be pretty similar to tanker helmet mounted PNW-57. It needs an external light source but I really just want to see if I'll have fun trying to spot a beaver that's been pissing me off and stuff like that.

Do you all already have hobbyist groups with this stuff or are there any ways to meet with a group of people to do night shoots, general exploration, astronomy? I picked up a refurbished PVS-7 with a Omni 7 tube to start out with and its nice and all but not having anyone else to tag along with kinda sucks.

Anyone have experience with the Chinese copies of the unity axon? I want a dual crane switch version but they don't make one but the Chinese copies do have that as an option for my Iris 4. I much prefer the form factor of the axon versus the switch that comes with the laser
