They're desperate to pretend to be relevant and a "peer" with the West, and unfortunately "hypersonic" has now been so fucking abused and genericized now that it's hard to have any real discussion. What the United States military means by "hypersonic weapons" and has been having so much trouble with is specifically "AIR-BREATHING hypersonic weapons", running some flavor of scramjet or the like. The reason that is potentially interesting is that it frees them from the rocket equation enabling a bunch of new capabilities, just like cruise missiles in general.But turdies have worked hard to pretend that it's purely about any speed, from barely hypersonic (mach 5ish is around the line), and that hypersonic glide vehicles (aka, a ballistic missile with a slightly different reentry vehicle) are the same thing as what the US has been trying to do which in turn means they can gloat about how they've somehow "beaten amerikka!!!!11!". It's retarded but that's been their strategy for ages like with the FOXBAT SUPER SEKRIT SUPER FIGHTER etc etc etc and this is just the latest iteration.

Maybe that's because they're only initially ballistic the final part involves navigating while hugging the ground to not get detected. That's what they're supposed to do according to the hypersonic definition

medium range ballistic missiles were banned pretty much from the beginning, the mirv number also got limited and further development and production of medium range ballistic missiles got banned as well. showing and using the oreshnik, a medium range ballistic missile with full mirv number count is basically a big fuck you to nato.
its also a huge problem for europe because its flight time to european capitals is so short that it makes the mad doctrine unfeasable for europe.icbms like minuteman and peacekeeper have a flight time of 30min to their target so the enemy has plenty of time to launch his icbms but with oreshnik, the flight time from russia to lets say paris is only 5 min so france only has 5 minutes to launch a counter strike.
