Everyone says to READ if you want to gain exposure to large amounts of vocabulary / less commonly encountered vocabulary. I don't feel like that really helps as much with chinese due to the large of correspondence with the written and spoken language. It feels like you have to learn two languages that happen to permit 1 to 1 translation.

I'm thankful that some aspects of morphology are simplified / more analytical in Modern Hebrew compared to Biblical. If I have 1. An introductory grammar book 2. A basic reader 3. The bible In French, and I can read the gospels due to my existing knowledge of then and carryover from latin + english; why would I bother with the reader and not just read the bible (or at least the New Testament) and subsequently transition to easier literature like those detective novels?
