Look I am a huge fan of his work, and he was a extremely talented individual but there's swaths of artist I encounter in communities constantly now that think it's worth drawing how he did. I do think it's a interesting exercise to try drawing how he does but for actually learning it's horrible. Its created this wave of artist who obsess over not using reference, not using guidelines, and I just find it very strange. Many professionals in the field use guidelines and references daily, there is no shame in it lol. I think many of these people don't realize that part of KJGs whole "schtick" was performative live drawing. Which is neat, but it isn't what people in actual jobs are doing. Does anyone else notice this shit? What gives? I've followed him for many many years and it seems that only recently people have decided to adhere their whole personality around his style and workflow. And, the people who do try to mimic him end up making dog shit art. Constantly in a state of struggle in understanding forms, values, and other fundamentals because they simply refuse to try using tools that have existed well before KJG to help their visions come to fruition.

Before him the noref flex was common online, I don't think he had a huge impact on that.

who cares what the crabs think art should be. think about yourself first OP, thats how this world is designed now, self-centered and egoistic. aim for a goal and go there with whatever means and i mean whatever means. if youre satisfied with it, then its exactly what it needs to be. references, gridding, constructing even algoslop (at least for conceptuals) is allowed. anything goes, nothing is true all these rules are made up. honour is a made up concept.be free.

'Gi was a fine arts students, grinded quadrillions of boxes from the very start, and learned discipline and actual weapons (thus boxes) from obligatory worst korea service; no contemporary artist now has this combo

He was kind of damaging. Not his fault, but the sheer spectacle of his raw savant-tier talent hypnotized a generation of kids who grew up on social media. It's not something anyone can or should aspire to do. More of a gimmick than a practical way of doing things.
Funny thing is, he used reference. He talked about it all the time, he was a reference studying machine. But people are idiots and like the spectacle. So what can you do, let them suffer by their own hand.
