You should post your work so that we know what is going on.
I honestly battle with these two ideas as well. On the one hand I want my art to be liked and my dream is to eventually make a living from it, but on the other hand I started to learn art because I feel that I have my own voice and something unique to say; I don't think that I would be happy doing flavour of the month trend chasing crap.
There are artists who are mercenaries, who illustrate other people's manga, who make advertisements for soulless corporations, and then on the other side there are artists who spend 40 years making art out of random garbage they find on the street with absolutely no recognition and make absolutely no money from it and are only posthumously recognized as an obscure footnote in art history classes. Right now I think I'm going to try to be somewhere between those 2 extremes. I want to make things that are unique and interesting to me, but I am also going to try to take feedback from the market.
