I tested pencils at an art store few years ago.
Here were my findings:First off, parameters. I used shitty notepad paper. I may redo this at a later point. The graphite shine doesn't show up on a scan, obviously. But I generally do not like shine. Easily-burnished pencils rated low for me. I also do not like scratchiness (nails on chalkboard) or excessively smooth (feels greasy and gross).
These are MOSTLY 4B. Some either lacked it or were not labelled, and one was a 5B that was in the wrong cubby and I grabbed it by mistake.THE WINNERS:
>General Kimberly (USA)
>Blick Studio 4B (Czech)The Blick was similar enough to the Kimberly that it would work well, but it was slighltly less-easy to get a good gradient with it and becomes shiny sooner.LOSERS:
>Faber-Castell 9000
Felt real greasy and gross. I do not recommend this one. I don't know why people rate it highly.
>Mars Lumograph Black
>Derwent Ivory Black
>Conte a Paris Pierre Noire
>Wolff's Carbon
These all are either pure charcoal or a mix with graphite. Extremely scratchy, vibrated the worksurface to the point I felt it in my arm bones.
>Lyra
Literally a graphite crayon, not a pencil. Feels like a crayon, blech. That said all of this is up to personal preference. If you like the feeling of charcoal or a "buttery" feel, use it.I should redo this using a piece of my usual drawing paper and see how it goes.
