The only digital art I really like is vintage game art (i.e. pixel art). Henk Nieborg, Mark Ferrari, the PC-98 eroge artists, the sprite and background artists at Namco, Capcom, Konami, Irem, Sega, etc. during the '80s and '90s — these people created authentic digital art. Digital drawing and painting that tries to mimic the appearance of trad (which means most digital drawing and painting) puts me off. It's fake. Conversely, MS Paint doodles have SOVL because they aren't hiding what they are. Dipping a nib into an ink well and putting the nib to paper, knowing that you can't ctrl+z if you fuck it up, is something that can't be faked. The feeling of a pencil scratching against textured paper can't be faked. You can't really get the benefit of trad, the full serving of SOVL, outside of the real thing. What's more, most digital artists don't get it: They zoom in 2000% and scrub away at tiny details; rotate and re-size parts when the painting is almost finished, and so on. This is part of why it doesn't look like trad. They can't give up on all the crutches.
