Self-reflection.
Imo the best thing about Bert Dodson's book is not teaching you how to "see". The book provides a set of self-assessment questions that you can use as a basis for this advice.
Draw > figure out what's wrong/you dislike > try to correct it > take notes for future reference > review the notes regularly if possible
Rinse and repeat.
This applies to learning math, programming, writing, music, chess, etc.
It's a form of self-discovery.
