you ever seen those yt videos where artist make a palette and twist it so they dont know which color is which? And they turn everything into grey scale and paint the pictures based on the value. And the painting would become beautiful looking even if the colors are totally different. However the value of the painting sets the stage on the painting. Color is only to give the painting/illustration the vibe/emotion of the image. Value places the image into 3d form/reality.

illustration, or rather, printing illustration in serigraphy has pretty commonly an emphasis on value, since the process of printing like that requires you to properly design layout of every bit of colour, and lazy people would rather make an image that's mostly 2-3 values than full value range and play with colour.

yeah, but it works on the same genesis, the artist didn't want to put in the effort into a full palette so he just made a lonely character on an empty black field
