No living artists today can teach his methods because despite Bouguereau being inept at drawing compared to renaissance masters, he is lightyears better at drawing and painting than all of the "top" natural realism painters today. He is closer to Sargent in his optical methods with slight design using neoclassical proportions. He used live models to do many drawing studies to get the figure, proportions, anatomy and lighting down and would then move onto quick painting studies.Also, why would you want to draw like him? He doesnt have much to say in terms of the art world that preceded him and his work amounts to "pretty" paintings of hot nude french girls as did all other work during and after the 18th century.

You can draw it, but getting the layers of temperature and chroma in that skin is impossible outside of oil paint.

Try starting with a grisaille or verdaccio, then build up undertones with glazing, painting from dark to light. As white will naturally be somewhat opaque, you'll have more transparent shadows than lights. Easier said than done, but I want to see more artists paint like they're in love with it like he did.

Hockney was coping the fact that he will always be a hackfraud by saying everyone used it. If it was true Hockney wouldn't be making paintings as bad as he does.
Outside of Vermeer and Flemish artists who used optical tools those were limited to 1600s Netherlands as standard buy debatable artist by artist but to say that was all they did is stupid.
Even then the fact is we have better and more closer working methods that were written for 18th century artists.
They use plumb lines at most but didn't always need to, they often raw dogged it and Bouguereau was in the lower end of the spectrum meaning he could have potentially used pure eye sight alone ever more so.
As important as observation is Colleen Barry lacks the painting methods that Vermeer used to make his paintings so iconic. Hockney is a retard who can use a camera lucids and still produce a piece of dogshit just as bad as he ever made.
