Well even though they are a bit out there; I like Elijah Muhammad's work on study of fiqh and his revival of a new madhhab to the American context. Elijahi fiqh, with it's emphasis on a batin reading of the Quran and the use of post-revelatory Hadiths; provides a needed perspective to Islam. It, by freeing itself from the circularity of Ijma and using verifiable minority hadiths, is getting closer to the Islam of the Salaf.

The black "muslim" sects are a one long line of conmen who create their own sects and teach their apprentices the ways of being a conman until said apprentices backstab him and make their own sect and teach new apprentices to repeat the cycle. Malcolm X was the only one who didn't start his own new cult.

Their close relationship with Scientology and advocacy of Dianetics is the most bewildering them about them imo.

The theory that the founder (Wallace Fard Muhammad) wasn't even a black man but some Middle Eastern or South Asian guy is also interesting

The Allah Temple of Islam which preceded Nation of Islam was pretty nutty bunch as well. It was abolished and the ex-members rebranded themselves as NOI after one of its genuinely insane schizo members murdered another as a human sacrifice for Allah.
