Desegregation is why America doesn't have walkable cities or mass-transit
The only real US Cities are the Northeastern Cities + Chicago + San Francisco, everything else is fake!
Most US Cities are structured like giant suburbs, it's impossible to tell when the city ends & the suburb begins. The reason for this is desegregation. Pre-Desegregation, pretty much all major US cities were structured like San Francisco, you had mass-transit & streetcars everywhere. Due to desegregation, all of these systems were torn down. Desegregation is also why the US doesn't have a national healthcare system. The Dixiecrats blocked Truman from implementing a national healthcare system because he desegregated the army. Simping for a a suburban style city is dumb, it just says you're scared of blacks & let blacks rule you & define how you live your life.
People historically lived in the New York to Chicago corridor region. In 1950, New York was the most populated state & Pennsylvania was the second most populated state. The whole region was filled with passenger railroads. New York Penn Station is named after the defunct Pennsylvania Railroad. Almost no one lived in Western States, people literally fled the Northeast to populate middle of nowhere states like Colorado & Arizona due to Desegregation.

DESEGREGATION IS NOT THE CAUSE FOR URBAN SPRAWLING; IF IT WERE, THERE WOULD BE NO URBAN SPRAWLING ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

The walkable cities meme is incredible bait because there is no actual standard for what a walkable city even is because urbanism isn't a real discipline so you can just use the term "walkable" like a weightless buzzword to apply/deny to anything you want based on personal ideology and vibes. That's why all urbanist arguments boil down to just pointing fingers at random aerial images of suburbs (only American suburbs are unwalkable for some reason, even though American-style suburbs exist in Europe too such as in Belgium)
this is coming from someone who doesn't even have a drivers license and uses a bike to get everywhere. I really wish all urbanists on the internet found the closest freeway to them and jumped into oncoming traffic. The world would be a better place if you all did.

False, it was the invention of the air conditioner making it inhabitable that really let the sun belt grow. The actual south managed to grow from internal migration too, despite being full of black people.
I don't know Colorado's history as well though, I imagine the northeast being too expensive played a role but that state isn't as hot.
Jet travel also helped with encouraging western settlement, you weren't going as far in terms of travel times.

America doesn't have walkable cities because car and oil companies lobbied against anyone who resisted their 6 gorilion highway cash cow that they promised would only be limited to One More Lane™.

Blaming Corporations is always a copout. Every Corporation lobbies for their own interest, sure, but the reason why the automobile companies were successful was because of Desegregation.

The reason why San Francisco is so walkable and pedestrian friendly is because there are so many Chinese there.

Cars didn't become popular because the auto industry was powerful. The auto industry became powerful because cars were popular.

Those cities were never legally / de jure segregated THOUGH. New Orleans was.People actually lived pretty close together in segregated southern cities. Like the "back of the bus" thing became an issue because the colored section was in the back, but people were riding in the same bus.A lot of people don't have any real familiarity with the south and the history and how it played out IRL. Segregation was enforced explicitly by law, but people could also live closer together. There would be separate entrances for the same building. There would also be white and colored bathrooms. People were using the same stuff but it was segregated. In the 1700s-1800s there was plantation chattel slavery but the plot twist is that whites and blacks could actually live closer together and interact more than their descendants would do later after migrating north, a lot of it was rather bound up in maintaining a particular kind of social order:

Los Angeles debunks this. The city had an extensive streetcar network and a minimal black population in the 1950s. The city's residents nonetheless voted to defund public transportation to reduce taxes and replace it with car centric highway systems paid for with federal grants.
