Miamis rapid development and population increase in the 20th century happened for the same exact reason as Southern California's, and that reason is World War II. Only difference was while the military chose Southern California as a base to put naval bases and airfields to defend against the Japanese, for Miami the focus was building a defense base against German U-boats. Obviously, with both Miami and California, the drug trade and an increase in immigration followed, but these were a result of both locations rapid development rather than the other way around.
