Back then opium and opioids were the equivalent of OTC drugs of today, cheap and easy to acquire. Just get yourself completely zooted out and ignore the pain, which isn't hard since you're literally using opioids.

This is why religion was big back in the day, life genuinely just sucked complete ass then you died. Things like medicine killed religion as much as anything else.
