as much as it pains me to say this, as a communist who thinks the fall of the ussr was the worst thing to happen to the world since ww2, the warsaw pact was an instrument of soviet social imperialism, that invaded multiple nations that were either coerced into communism (poland, romania) or locked into it after legitimate elections (hungary, checoslovakia, bulgaria).
krushev was opposed ations going out of the pact (1956), but otherwise allowed reformism (post invasion hungary, poland).
if the brezhnev doctrine never came into effect and they had let dubcek and other states do their reforms, maybe my judgement would be less harsh
