Should I learn Photoshop or Illustrator first? I know both are practically essential, but which is better to learn first?

What do you want to learn it for? I would say photoshop if you want just to fuck around. Illustrator if you want to be a graphic designer, but you would need to learn both. Either way, the most important thing is learn how to think with them. You need what you want to do, then use the tool to do it. Imagine like if you were given those huge toolboxes and somebody told you "now you can fix anything in your home". Without knowing what to do with them or what to use for, it is as good as a paper weight. Same goes to ps/ai

You kind of need both, depending on what you do. Unless you're a like photographer or digital painter, the vector graphics due to scaling and being applicable everywhere, - those assets and the multi-page projects (put together in Illustrator, XD, Figma, Sketch, InDesign etc.) will be fundamentally more important in UI and print design than what specifically you use for freehand sketches and cropping, retouching and smudging up some stock photos (in Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Krita etc.) you insert in those vector projects. Websites are almost entirely vector graphics, - scalable, responsive typographic layouts with SVG vector icons. Vectors for most part are more boring, methodical and tedious to learn and do well though, but that's ure job.

In school we learned Photoshop before Illustrator and after Illustrator we learned InDesign. I'm pretty sure there's a reason we learned them in this order, I just cannot express it as well as my instructors would.

They are very , very different. As in: it doesn't matter which one you learn first.Unless you know what you're trying to do, the. You should start with the best tool for your case.

Those are different applications with different approaches and use cases. It really depends on your goals.Photoshop works best with pixels and has its strength in image editing. Illustrator is a vector-based program and is used to create scalable graphics. If you are diving into graphic design in general and have no specific task in mind yet, I'd suggest to start with Photoshop first, because it also has some vector features and is more versatile overall.

You don't need to 'learn' software. You need to learn design. What do you want to do? Start with a task. Like 'branding for a space travel company' or 'website for making street signs'. Look at what people usually require for such jobs and make it in whatever tool you want. You'll learn software while you gonna working on the task. Solving the problem should be first, software is secondary.

I heard that the recent Photoshop versions push their subscript AI shit and that CAF got worse as a result (to push you to buy credits for their AI fill-in replacement), is that true? Should I grab 2023 or around there?

Learn Photoshop then Illustrator, and apply design basics knowledge while at it Photoshop is for pixel stuff, image editing and composing Illustrator for vector graphics, so basically a lot of shit between creating icons for apps and logos to composing a full vectorial illustration, webside mockups or creating anything typography intensive after that go InDesign once you get into layouts and grids for dense text and multipage prints like books and mags
