For various reasons, Kimi K3 is probably the closest that China will ever get to closing the gap. The gap between frontier models will just get larger and larger over time. America has won the frontier war so hard that the Anthropic and OpenA.I don't even need to release their newest frontier models, they just sitting on them internally, probably to prevent distillation attacks from the chinese. The race is over, China will never even get close to Astra tier or even hope to ever catch up within a million years, the gap will just get wider and wider.
>Compute
This is biggest issue facing China. With RSI coming within a year, stuff like talent or clever training/programming tricks don't mean anything. When the models can improve itself, the only thing that matters is the amount of compute, and China is chronically lacking in compute. They might get their own EUV machine in 10-15 years, in which case they will be able to make their own SOTA chips, but it's far far too late by then.
>Increased restrictions
We will likely see far more agressive american action to restrict chinese A.I development. Trump hates China with a passion and America is full of China hawks, it's basically the only thing the two parties can agree on. Oh and the A.I CEOs also personally hate China with a passion, like Dario and Zuckerberg.
There's already rumors of even more semiconductor sanctions or bans, or even more restrictions on chipmaking equipment, maybe even a global ban on chinese A.I or sanctions on chinese AI companies or even banning the sale of south korean memory to China. We are also seeing even more actions to prevent distillation attacks by the chinese and even offensive actions, like allowing american private companies to conduct cyberwarfare or even military kinetic action vs chinese data centers or labs, something that Dario and Trump will likely use to go to war with Chinese A.I labs to destroy them.

China doesn't need to catch up. The US keeps importing cheap Chinese workers and simply isn't willing, and probably not able, to stop using Chinese workers. US companies are having melt downs over those Chinese workers they imported as cheap labor having more loyal to their homeland than to the company that made their low level of regard for workers quite clear.
What would happen if US companies stopped importing workers? We'll never know because most of those companies would rather go bankrupt than develop local talent and pay those workers a reasonable share of what their work is worth.
The current setup ensures that China will always have access to whatever is the cutting edge and rapidly copy it. The addiction of US companies to imported labor ensures that none of this will change. The US simply has no way to keep more than a few micrometers ahead of China because it is completely addicted to Chinese labor.

Chinese guy just flew to China with an American model not long back. Chinese have essentially completely cloned the ASMR machines. They don't need to spend moonshot money on R&D if they are satisfied with being slightly behind and doing it nearly for free. Which they are.We had this battle with the Soviets for decades. Sure they had their own tech but they would shamelessly steal it without compunction. Shit the US stole stealth technology from the Soviets who didn't even realize the importance of the research.
