The US is too concerned with short-term gain. Case-in-point: Publicly traded companies are the only ones which publicly need to disclose their financials and also need to guarantee quarterly earnings. That means RnD, buying up useful start-ups and funding institutes to cooperate with only is feasible if you got massive income streams which generate more than what they themselves cost, the cost of the aforementioned and a little more so you're still profitable and even then there might be a leaner competitor which piques more interest from investors.

I suspect a major reason is geopolitics. US has a wide range of oil options. I mean, we just got into a "deal" with Venezuela to consume some billions of oil barrels. Seems like it would be "easier" to consume more oil than work on renewable energy. China has to deal with adversaries (e.g. US) blocking oil imports, so it's critical to them the country can function without it. Not to mention, the oil producing countries (Russia, Iran) associated with China are shitting the bed, so even more reason to transition away from oil as much as possible, as soon as possible.

Greed Solar panels are dirt cheap, but installers want at least $10k-$20k for installation. It absolutely kills the return on investment. The $7,500 subsidy made solar panels a good buy, but Trump killed that. Electricity prices are increasing 15% a year though, so expect every upper middle class house to have solar in less than 5 years.

Most likely it is some bullshit regulatory requirements that make such a product non-viable in the US. It's also something that sounds a lot cooler than it really is. You still need a more or less normal roof and all a "solar roof" would do is put a layer on top with solar panels. The problem is that mounting anything on top of a normal roof requires punching holes, which are a problem on a roof. The other option is making the tiles themselves into a roofing material. Roofing materials are very cheap relative to electronics and importantly they need to cover a large amount of square footage. That is where electronics costs increase into untenable levels.Realistically the only way to do this is to make a low-rise platform for solar panels that glues onto a strip of roof tiles which are designed to be replaced more often. The solar panel platform would have some gaps built in to allow moisture to pass underneath to the normal roofing material.

In the UK there was a case where a farmer wanted to install some solar panels on marginal land (basically, land too shitty to grow anything). He wrote to the Green-led council for permission because property rights don't exist anymore, and they responded that he'd have to dig a pit to put them in (???) so it wouldn't ruin anyone's view. Again, this is shitty land in the middle of nowhere, not whatever idyllic countryside you're imagining in your head. Anyway, this doubled the cost of installation so he ended up not doing it. The supermajority of environmentalists in the West believe we should solve climate change by first passing regulations that triple the cost of clean energy projects, and then having the government subsidize these projects by 40%, so we can take out billions of debt and still have things be too expensive. They're also opposed to nuclear power plants, because they think they explode like a hydrogen bomb when they melt down.In China, if you own a bunch of land you can just put a huge solar panel factory there if you want, and they power the factories with coal to save money. Much better strategy.(Pic related: most of the difference is due to environmental regulation.)

Excellent bait thread. Tesla's solar roof tile failed not solar in general. Your picture should provide all the info you need. It can't reach the same economies of scale as simpler large panel installations. In addition each installation needs to be specifically adapted to the roof since the tiles are the roof, you can't employ cookie cutter patterns.
