Threadly reminder to check out Fisheye Placebo for more cyberpunk goodness.
>Vance just wanted to make the most out of his college experience under a totalitarian regime, and if that meant hacking into the university to assign himself a hot female roommate, then so be it. The last thing he expected was to be dragged into a crazy conspiracy to overthrow the government by his most-definitely-not-female roommate.

I know protonmail is more confidential than gmail but the social stygma of giving out your email with proton dot me is keeping me from using it. Imagine writing a protonmail email on a CV you give to an employer. He's going to think "person concerned about privacy, person of concern, red flag".It's the only reason preventing me from switching, I don't care about google's 15 Gb vs protonmail's 1 Gb, both work for my usecase. You have to balance privacy with convenience.

Speaking of mass surveillance:
>Wear Your Way Out Of AI Surveilance
https://hackaday.com/2026/08/29/wear-your-way-out-of-ai-surveilance/
>For decades now many of us have lived in surveillance societies where it’s difficult not to be within the view of a camera. When being noticed depended on the attention span of a minimum wage security guard perhaps this mattered less, but in an age of AI, the vigilance has become always-on. To address this problem the German designer [Simon Weckert] has created a fabric designed to confuse an AI scanning an image, and cause it to not recognize the wearer as a person.
>The result is perhaps best described as “loud”, a pattern of saturated colors that targets the algorithms used in recognition. The tests he shows appear to work, but perhaps the most obvious thing from them is that he sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb to the eye wearing such a… vibrant garment. Also we wonder for how long it will remain effective, as algorithmic improvements seek to mitigate its attack.

>‘All it will take is one screw-up’: AI groups race to limit bioweapon risks
https://archive.is/aBBLN
>Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind are stepping up work on biological risk testing, access controls and other safeguards to limit misuse of advanced AI systems that they hope will speed up drug discovery, aid disease research and prevent pandemics.
>The safety push reflects a growing belief among AI executives and biosecurity experts that biology may be the next field, after cyber security, that will need to be secured as new models become more powerful.
>David Relman, professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford, said there was not yet scientific consensus on the level of risk that AI poses in biology. Nonetheless, the scientific community and policymakers were currently “unprepared” for threats, he said.
>“All it will take is one screw-up, and we will in one hot second destroy any remaining trust the public has in science, in medicine and in the promise of technology in a way that will take years to recover,” he added. And this comes after intelligence agencies warned about ethnically tailored pathogens, which was quickly dismissed by the intellectual elite. What could possibly go wrong?

This is a cybersecurity thread right? I have a question. Nearly three weeks ago I bought an used PC that had a cracked "activator" on it for hard disk sentinel pro. It had 40/66 detections on virustotal. I have no idea how severe it is, but it did have admin rights so I just imagined the worst possible scenario at this point. Since I didn't have another clean device, I used windows cloud reinstall with the "full wipe" option selected for all drives, then plugged in an empty USB to make a windows 10 media creation tool, after which I deleted all partitions until it said "Unallocated Disk Space" for all drives. I'm only worried since people explicitly say you need to make a windows flash drive on a CLEAN device. Before I used the USB (so during the time windows was reinstalled through cloud) I ran a full scan with malwarebytes (no rootkit scan tho, forgot about it) and it didn't find anything, also a windows defender full scan on usb reinstalled windows and same result. Think I also did offline scan but it didn't give me any result. Two weeks have passed and my discord account which im logged into through firefox has not been hacked, but im kinda skeptical to plug in my other usb that has notepads with passwords. Can malware/infostealers somehow attach themselves onto usbs meant for windows reinstalls? Am I still at risk or am I being overly paranoid?

Microsoft’s Brings Verification System To Windowshttps://reclaimthenet.org/microsofts-brings-verification-system-to-windows>Just in time for the global digital ID agenda playing out, Microsoft has published instructions for developers on how to use an API that is not yet active.>The API, or programming interface, is designed to let apps on the Windows 11 operating system find out a user’s age bracket, and whether that age has been verified by an “identity provider.”>The age bracket is very broad: under 10, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, and 18 and over. The verification status, on the other hand, can be one of five options: Verified, Unverified, OptedOut, TemporarilyUnavailable, or NotApplicable.>Microsoft does not go into what these identity providers will be, or what evidence they will use to verify a person’s age. The company only says that the second value returned by the API will show “whether the user’s age has been independently verified by the identity provider.”>Microsoft frames this as a way to improve privacy, by giving app developers a way to determine a user’s age without actually knowing their date of birth, or any other personally identifiable information. According to Microsoft, this is a “privacy-preserving mechanism” that will allow apps to comply with regulations concerning child safety. But, as we’ve seen from bills that call for this type of technology to be installed in operating system, this is all about normalizing age checks (and therefore ID checks) at all stages of digital life.>In this case, an age signal does not directly expose the user’s age or date of birth. Instead, it provides a way to adapt content, features, or access controls in an app based on the user’s age range and age verification status. For example, an app can use the age signal for user-generated content, social or communication tools, in-app purchases, virtual currencies, or maturity-rated media.
