Tourist here,
I am not much for fashion, but there' a thing that has always mystified me. Why is it that fedoras used to be so common, and many men wearing them looked striking, yet elegant and respectable wearing them, yet they have become synonymous with ugly nerds. I looked for pictures of modern men trying to pull the look off, yet I couldn't find a single one, pictures ranged from the aforementioned cringey nerds, to even otherwise handsome men who still couldn't pull the look off.
What gives? Is there some supernatural curse involved, or you can still make it work, and if so, what do you need to do?

Fedoras and similar hats got progressively phased out as men's jobs required them to spend more time indoors and cars becoming ubiquitous. So about the early to mid 60's they were mostly abandoned.
In the early days of classic internet, a bunch of ugly shutin losers brought back fedoras as a sign of class (or so they preyended) and theonce staple of menswear became associated to cringy nerds, perhaps forever.

The stereotype of the cringey nerd hat rests on two things1. The cheapest possible hat bought off of aliexpress or similar for 10$ - think Doug tier stuff2. The fedora on the nerd has to be paired with sweatpants and t shirt not and not styled in a particularly decent way. They wanted to epitomize class without saving up to buy any cool pieces nor pairing what they have in a way that looks good.

I think a lot of modern fedoras miss the mark just in the way they look. Modern styles are just not the same, the crown is a lot lower and most of them are blocked with the teardrop shape instead of being formed by the wearer like one used to do. This made the hat look like it was owned and lived in instead of just bought and thrown on. Also the wide brim really works best with a structured suit jacket or an overcoat, which is hard enough to find people in.

hard to wear in cars, and went away with the suit, though the suit held out for another decade or two. whenever someone asks what hat to wear with a suit today there's never a good answer, the two go hand in hand.beanies are more functional headwear for the winter, and straw hats are better for the summer. the felt fedora just doesn't have a place anymore like the double breasted suit, which was a suit you'd button up in the morning and wear all day buttoned up until you go to bed. if men wear a suit now, it's just for a few hours, so they're all single breasted now.

>to even otherwise handsome men who still couldn't pull the look offThe menswear enthusiasts usually looks performative and more like a costume, like the Pitti Uomo circus.
The hat doesn't go with the modern clothes or look too big.
Men doesn't look as masculine and rugged as before.I think Johnny Depp is a modern example that makes it work because he actually wears them and if you look at the images he's particular about the creases, pinches and the angle, very sprezzatura. His outfit looks nonchalantly thrown together, but he has obviously spent a lot of time perfecting the look.
