What is the purpose of cardigans other than style? It's too low buttoned and thin to protect from cold. Why not just get a zip-up sweater?

Because it was originally designed to be worn with suits. It was like a sleeved and sweater version of the regular waistcoat. So you wore it under your suit jacket. It kept you warm and also didn't ruin the look of your suit. That's why it's open near the neck. The low neck also makes it a good choice to wear when it's not cold enough for a full on sweater, like in spring or fall. And fuck zip up sweaters. Sweaters with a zipper look wrong and weird.

I own cardigans and they can definitely protect from the cold, though not absolutely frigid temperatures. Their strength is that you can button, unbutton, wear off the shoulder, or remove, if you are unsure of the temperature or it changes, which you can't do with a full sweater as easily.

If you mean a quarter-zip, it's not nearly as versatile. If you mean something like a hoodie, cardigans tend to just have a better fit, with the strength of the hoodie being the hood and perhaps better pockets.
